Herman B. Menkis was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 15, 1923. He worked as an insurance broker with Cutler-Herlen Insurance and retired in 1985 after 25 years. Menkis moved to Albuquerque in 1986, where he died on July 27, 1998. Menkis spent much of his retirement years composing hundreds of chess problems and publishing them in international chess journals, such as Ideal-Mate Review, U.S. Problem Bulletin, Stratagems, and Problemkiste.
